Self Tape Tips & Resources
The topic of self tapes can be triggering. Some love self taping, and some absolutely hate it. Regardless of how we all feel, all signs indicate that self tapes are here to stay. Before I get into tips and resources, I’d like to briefly address the importance of mindset and perspective. To quote a casting friend, “in the before times” (aka prior to the pandemic) auditions were primarily in person. That audition grind brought it’s own set of frustrations, which included crazy commutes, parking issues, last minute requests and cancelations, and chaotic audition rooms. To truly be successful, you had to work at it. Success with self tapes is no different.
I’d also like to point out that every new tech advance that impacts talent also impacts the job of the Casting Director. Believe me, we are adapting and adjusting right along side actors. We’re also paying close attention to “the asks” as clients also adjust to this new normal and casting figures out what works and doesn’t work to get the best results from those who submit. Lastly, remember that casting and clients are used to seeing talent on a small screen. Let that encourage you as you as you explore the resources below that can help you improve your self tape skills.
For those interested in a home studio “set up guide”, Prestigious Models shared a comprehensive blog post I found particularly informative. They share images of good lighting, backdrops, and cell phone perspective, along with general costs of equipment. Before you spend a ton of money, I want to encourage you to look at the natural light sources you have in your space and consider what makes the most sense for your home and your budget. Casting loves a great set up, but we love a great performance even more. https://prestigiousmodels2015.wordpress.com/2020/04/14/importance-of-self-tape/
There’s much more to say on the Self Tape subject, and I think SAG-AFTRA did a great job summarizing tips with their 5 Helpful Self Taping Reminders article:
In terms of the actual deliverable, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the occasional need for getting a reader. Talent often ask if the skill of the reader matters, and it certainly can if the person distracts from you. Still, casting and clients are used to watching videos and ignoring the reader in the room. Believe me, unless the person is “clowning”, we can ignore your volunteer friend, relative, or representative too.
